UASD can also read in the configuration that already exists in the scanner and save it out to the hard drive. Each system is saved into a comma-delimited text file, a huge advantage over the binary files that other products use. Figure 10 shows the Scanner View dialog along with the Save button that allows you to save your configuration as shown in figure 11.

Notice that you have the option in the Save dialog of which systems in the scanner you want to save. Systems that already exist on the hard drive are identified by appending "Already exists". If you wish, you can overwrite the existing file or you can create a new file. This is a great feature because it allows you to make changes on the scanner while away from your computer and then save them any way you choose, either overwriting the original or creating a new system.
Online Control
In addition to being able to program and backup your scanner, UASD also provides for online control of your scanner. The interface for this feature is identical to the scanner itself as shown in figure 12. All of the scanner's buttons are live in this mode and you can click on them to interact with the scanner. Why would you want to do this? One reason is that you might want to sit the radio itself in a corner while the batteries charge. Using the online control mode, you can still see what's going on and control the radio easily from your computer.
By right-clicking on the scanner image and choosing Extended from the menu, you can access the extended online control. From this dialog (shown in figure 13), you can log radio transmissions and save them out to a file. UASD allots one row for each TGID and simply increments the column that indicates the number of transmissions received. I'd like to also be able to have it log one row for each transmission received, but that option is not available. Still, this feature is neat and allows for easily logging what you listen to.
You can also manage your locked out frequencies from the Extended online control window. Using this feature, you can easily unlock frequencies that are locked out or simply display them. Having this ability greatly enhances lockout management, something that's often a hassle in today's scanners.
